Qashqai Leads Nissan UK Sales in March

Nissan’s British division yesterday announced official sales figures for March 2010, showing a huge 68% leap over the same month last year. Leading the sales were the manufacturer’s British built models, namely the Qashqai, the Note and the Micra.

The manufacturer gained a car market share of 3.7% in the UK last month, becoming the second biggest selling Japanese brand in the country. LCV sales also resulted in a 3.8% market share.

The Qashqai was last month’s best-seller, jumping 13% compared with the same month in 2009, with 3,997 units sold in March 2010. The seven-seat Qashqai+2 also boosted sales, with a massive 176% increase taking the total to 1,104 last month.

The Nissan Note MPV also saw a 70% increase, with 3,749 units sold last month compared to March 2009. Of course, the Micra also posted a 79% boost over the same period last year, with 3,426 sold in March 2010.

“With the industry still under pressure, we’re delighted to be leading from the front for the UK manufacturing industry,”
Nissan’s UK MD, Paul Willcox, said in a release. “The success of the Qashqai, Note and Micra shows there’s nothing our Sunderland Plant can’t achieve. Looking further ahead, we have every expectation that this sales success will continue. Following the announcement that the all-new Electric Leaf model will also be manufactured in Britain along with the Juke crossover model, the future is looking very bright for Nissan in the UK.”

Nissan’s success, however, is mostly thanks to its recently extended scrappage scheme, which provides a minimum £2,000 trade-in against a British built Nissan for any model over 7 years old.
