American roads are about to get swamped by a brand new fleet of Azure Dynamics trucks after Purolator, one the largest courier companies in Canada announced it had ordered no less than 600 Balance Hybrid vehicles.
Purolator, which thus becomes Azure's largest customer for this segment in terms of volume, will receive the vehicles over the next three years in equal batches, bringing in the end the number of Balance vehicles in use in its fleet to 955.
The value of the order has not been disclosed by either party, but the order is for Azure of great importance, being the largest order of hybrid electric technology ever received from a single customer.
"Purolator continues to be our largest volume customer and consistently demonstrates a strong commitment to the environment by adding cleaner, greener Azure vehicles to its fleet," said Scott Harrison, Azure CEO.
"As a result of our long and mutually beneficial relationship with Purolator, our Balance Hybrid Electric volume has consistently increased allowing us to reduce internal costs, refine our processes and implement product upgrades.”
The vehicles to be delivered to the courier company are equipped with Azure's Balance system, one which is said to allow the vehicles using it to achieve a reduction in fuel consumption of about 40 percent and cut CO2 emissions by 30 percent.
In Purolator's case, the Balance vehicles will come in the form of Ford E450 chassis, equipped with Ford 5.4l gasoline engines. The hybrids will be capable of travelling when below 20 miles per hour on electricity and also provides engine-off at idle.
