A 4-month adorable puppy was found alive and relatively unharmed nearly 2 weeks after a serious crash. Bella is now back with her human, helping him make a speedier recovery.
Last month, Michael Crocker from Orange County, California, was driving off the famous Route 66 in Flagstaff, Arizona. He fell asleep at the wheel of his GMC Yukon, veered off the road and hit a traffic sign, and rolled over.
Bella, an adopted mixed yellow lab pup, was traveling with him at the time of the crash, but she was either ejected in the crash or fled from the wreck moments after impact. While Crocker was airlifted to a hospital in Phoenix, authorities were unable to locate Bella.
The family spent days looking for her, before enlisting the help of the Humane Animal Rescue and Trapping Team, Crocker tells CBS Los Angeles. However, by the time 13 days had lapsed since the accident, they had lost hope of ever finding her.
To their surprise, a member of the group found Bella near the crash site, whimpering amid broken glass and car pieces. Her leash had gotten caught on branches, which made it impossible for her to move but which may also have saved her life, preventing her from running on the road and getting hit by a car.
Bella is now back home with Michael, who calls her a “survivor” for going 13 days without food and water in the desert. Michael himself is one: the accident mangled his hand and doctors had to amputate his thumb and harvest tissue for a skin graft. He considers himself lucky for not being injured more seriously.
After she was recovered from the accident site, Bella had to receive treatment for an infection and, of course, be given plenty of food and water. The report notes that she hasn’t left Michael’s side since they were reunited.
As for the Yukon, it was totaled in the rollover.
