Driver assistance technologies deployed en-masse on cars are perhaps the ones that make the difference when a buyer decided in favour of one car or another. The cooler the gadgets, the better the odds.
Knowing this, PSA, the French group that encompasses Peugeot, Citroen, DS, and Opel, said on Tuesday it plans on making voice assistant technology commonplace for its lineup.
The French said their new generation voice assistant will be powered by SoundHound, a Santa Clara, California-based company that develops artificial intelligence (AI) and natural language voice recognition technology.
As per the details provided by the group, the new voice assistant will act on its own on a multitude of the task, such as when it comes to picking a certain restaurant that meets certain criteria. It will also be able to activate vehicle functions, regulate temperature, ventilation and the direction of air conditioning and launch connected services.
“The unique Deep Meaning Understanding technology developed by SoundHound Inc. is the only solution that, like a human being, can instantly answer multiple questions asked in a single sentence,” says PSA in a statement.
"SoundHound is developing voice and AI integration algorithms to tailor the world's fastest speech recognition technology and seamless, natural language understanding capability to Groupe PSA’s vehicles."
PSA says the new technology will be made available on its vehicles within two years.
Choosing to go the voice-control way is in line with PSA’s plans when it comes to the implementation of such technologies. The group just announced it will pull Opel towards its own connectivity services in Europe, dropping the carmaker’s use of OnStar starting next year.
For Opel, the system is called Connect and features an emergency call, connected navigation, vehicle diagnostics, stolen vehicle assistance, remote vehicle access and fleet management capabilities. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also supported in the PSA suite.
