Prost: Politics to Threaten French GP Future

Alain Prost revealed that plans to host a Formula One race in France in 2011 are being affected by the political battle within the French government. As Magny-Cours lost all chances of becoming an F1 host in the near future – due to its poor developed infrastructure – Prost was on his way to securing a new site for an F1 venue, northeast of Paris, namely the project at Flins-Les-Mureaux.

However, while benefiting from backing of French prime minister Francois Fillon, the project is strongly being opposed by another member of the French parliament, environment minister Jean-Louis Borloo. Although members of the same cabinet, the two officials strongly disagree on the potential circuit at Flins-Les-Mureaux, which makes it impossible for Prost to go ahead with the planning of an F1 race.

As argued by the 4-time F1 champion, the only final solution on the aforementioned project could come after a “public debate”, but that would only lead to more complications. While urging the French government to take a unitary stand on the matter, Prost said he doesn't expect these “political problems” to end soon.

On the side of the government, it is necessary that everything is clear. Everyone has their own agenda. It is difficult to get everyone in unison, much time and energy is wasted. And then there are the people who make a lot of noise without knowing enough. I don't want to give up but it is difficult to be constantly between two points: it is happening, it is not happening. It's typical France,” said Prost in an interview with Le journal du Dimanche newspaper.

As in the case of the British Grand Prix (with Silverstone), Prost insisted Magny Cours doesn't stand a chance of returning to the F1 schedule, although it's the only track that could theoretically host a future French Grand Prix.

The only alternative is Magny Cours, but it is not compatible with the desires of Bernie Ecclestone and the manufacturers,” added the former F1 ace.
