A professor of anesthesiology from Hong Kong used his vast experience to kill his wife and his daughter in what he hoped would appear as a malfunction of the car his wife was usually driving, a yellow MINIi Cooper.
Dr. Khaw Kim-sun, 53, is now standing trial on two separate murder charges, the New York Times reports. His initial story was that his daughter, 16, might have placed the carbon monoxide-filled yoga ball in the car herself, because she wanted to kill herself.

Prosecutors are arguing that he was the one who set everything up: he faked an experiment that required 2 yoga balls filled with the deadly gas. He took one of them home and left the other in his office, one day before his wife and daughter’s deaths in May 2015. Police found the second ball on the day of the murder.

Ironically, “when Dr. Khaw drove the yoga balls home in his Toyota, he had used a monitor that would sound an alarm if the gas reached dangerous levels,” prosecutors told the court, as per the publication. He then placed it in his wife’s car, not aware that she would be picking up their daughter from school that day.

A jogger went past the stationary MINI Cooper and found it strange that both its occupants were napping. She became concerned when she noticed that the wipers were on even though it wasn’t raining.

“The wife, Wong Siew-fing, 47, and daughter, Lily Li-ling Khaw, 16, were pronounced dead soon after their arrival at the Prince of Wales Hospital, where Dr. Khaw worked. An autopsy found that the two had died from carbon monoxide poisoning,” the NY Times says.

Before investigators connected Dr. Khaw to the deflated yoga ball in the trunk and the deadly leak of gas, they assumed the MINIi Cooper had malfunctioned. That was the murderer’s intention, prosecutors are now saying. He may not have wanted to kill his daughter, but he did want his wife dead since she knew he was having an affair with one of his students and wouldn’t agree to give him a divorce.
