Volkswagen brought over not only the full production version of the Up! city car to Frankfurt this year, but also some very interesting concept. There was that little beach buggy that looked more like the Beetle than the Up that looked like it was at least going into limited production, plus the GT version, which definitely caught out attention as a possible replacement for the Lupo GTI.
But it’s the five-door hatchback version that was the key to the whole thing. Such a model was previewed using the cross up! concept, which not only added a couple of back doors, but also body armor resembling that on VW’s other Cross models.
Now, the German automaker has officially confirmed that the five-door will indeed make it into production, arriving onto the European market some time next year. The move seems only natural, seeing as rivals like the Toyota Aygo and Peugeot 107 also have five-door versions.
