Norway is full of electric crossovers from Hyundai and Kia, but that doesn't mean the Volkswagen ID Crozz won't be a success. These are the first spyshots of the production model, reminding us that its debut is imminent.
The Crozz is one of many concepts Volkswagen showed over the past few years with the intent of production. It showed up in 2017, and we most of that styling has been conserved. The family resemblance with the ID.3 is uncanny, as the two share proportions you don't see on regular Volkswagens - short hood, tapered greenhouse, and a small rear overhang.
As we mentioned, there are quite a few all-electric small SUVs out there. Kia and Hyundai produce the Soul, Kona and Niro, all with similar batteries and electric motors. Volvo has one planned for the XC40, Mitsubishi promised one for 2020 and the list could go one for quite a while. But the ID Crozz is different because it's based on a bespoke EV platform
As indicated by the prop shafts coming out of the wheels, the Crozz is rear-wheel-drive, at least in this situation. We expect it to have the same 204 HP motor as the ID.3, though a 306 HP AWD system with another motor at the front should be developed for it and sister cars from Audi, Skoda or SEAT. By the way, Ford is gaining access to the platform too.
Being a crossover and a Volkswagen, the Crozz might be the most popular one of them all. But they need to sell a lot of these MEB-based models to make it worth their while, up to a million units a year. It's definitely doable, but can you imagine a near future where this outsells the Tiguan?
While the RWD setup won't turn the Crozz into a drifting machine, there are other advantages baked into the platform, like having a lot of room for the battery or fast charging at 150 kW which will restore 80% energy in 30 minutes. Hopefully, not too many of them catch fire while doing that.
Part of the interior for the ID.3 hatchback has been leaked, so we know the German EVs will differ from your Golf and Passat in a number of ways. The Crozz will share its two tablet displays, near-buttonless dashboard, and a column-mounted shifter. Further down the line, Volkswagen plans to add augmented reality, which is why there's a big distance between the windshield and driver.
