The test mule-esque version of the Porsche 918 has recently been clocked around the Nurburgring with a time of 7 minutes and 14 seconds, an excellent time for a road-legal car. However, this time has already exceeded engineers’ original target of 7:20 to 7:22.
Porsche CEO, Matthias Muller, said: “If we are lucky, it will be under 7 minutes…but, I don’t know, we’ll see…” This clearly indicates their intentions, and the fact that they are genuinely aiming higher than first intended. Now, factoring in the fact that the current car is a mere prototype, Porsche still has a lot of time at its disposal to improve and tweak the car, as well as give it more track time.
We say it is definitely achievable, but since the car needs to perform excellently both on the road and the track, they should not sacrifice its drivability in the quest for pure speed, a trait the 918 already has in spades.
