Daimler has announced that it will be increasing production for the all-electric Smart ForTwo ED (Electric Drive), in order to keep up with the surprisingly strong demand for the little city runabout. With 1,000 units already made, production is now continually increased, in order to satisfy the larger-than-expected number of customers around the world.
The electric Smart is popular because of its low asking price, for an EV, of just $25,000 or its equivalent in other currencies, and factoring in the numerous government rebates offered in most countries, the amount you pay for the car will usually be considerably smaller than the asking price.

Construction of the Smart ForTwo ED is done in France, at Hambach, where the car is built alongside its conventionally-powered brethren, in a €200-million expansion to the original factory, which has been building the Smart since it was originally introduced, in the late 1990s.

Since it first went on sale, the Smart has sold a hugely impressive 1.4-million units, and they have broken the ice yet again, with the electric variant, which is the first all-electric vehicle ever built in Europe.
