Probably Not a Future Classic: Tuned BMW E46 330i Convertible

Just as the E30 M3 became one of the most sought-after cars in the world nowadays, we’re suspecting the E46 3 Series will soon follow.

In the wake of small, turbocharged engines fitted on cars made mostly out of carbon fibre, a true car with a naturally aspirated inline-6 engine that revs up to 8,000 RPM like the E46 M3 will be something people will desire.

That’s only part of the story though. The looks of the E46 models and their design, alongside the status they brought back in the early 2000s make them rare jewels.

To top everything off, the E46 M3 was the last model with a naturally aspirated inline 6-cylinder engine, being followed by the E9x model (that used a V8) and the F80 model that uses a turbocharged inline 6-cylinder unit.

That’s probably why, whenever we see a coupe or convertible E46 our heart skips a beat. The following car is a 330Ci model, not an M3 but its 3-liter engine is the basis for the S54 unit that powered the high-performance version.

Sure, as is, this one will never be looked upon as a classic, not because it’s ugly, but it has had too many add-ons mixed in to still call it ‘classy’. For the tuning scene, it’s quite something, though.

It has a Remus exhaust with an AFE intake, AC Schnitzer strut bars, Bilstein shock absorbers, H&R Springs and Brembo brakes. That’s just performance enhancing modifications.

From a visual standpoint, exterior modifications include a Rieger body kit, custom chromed grille and custom fog lights. Inside, you’ll find AC Schnitzer’s gear knob and gauges, an Eclipse head unit, Zapco amplifier and sound processor, JL subwoofers, Diamond Audio tweeters, Alpine displays and Diamond Audio speakers.

Now you must understand why this one will never make it as a classic. A proper, taken care of model though, might be just what you need, if you’re looking for a killing in profits in a couple of years.
