Cory Kennedy, a popular pro skateboarder and occasional actor, has been found guilty of vehicular homicide and vehicular assault in the fatal crash that occurred in August 2017, in Vashon Island, south of Seattle.
At the time of the accident, 27-year-old Kennedy was driving his mother’s Audi wagon; he lost control of the car and smashed into a tree. He had two passengers in the car and he admitted after the crash that he’d been speeding. Police recovered empty beer cans from the wreck and later established that Kennedy had also smoked marijuana.
When he was arrested, Kennedy had a .11 blood alcohol content, while the legal limit in the state of Washington is .08. Court documents obtained by Q13 Fox reveal that he called the crash the biggest mistake of his life, one that would haunt him for the rest of his life. Showing remorse was not enough to keep him out of jail.
“Mr. Kennedy might be a talented athlete and a good person, but on Aug. 30, 2017, he was selfish and irresponsible,” the prosecutor argued. He also brought up Kennedy’s history of traffic violations: it turns out the skateboarder had a long string of infractions, mostly for speeding.
The crash instantly killed Preston “P-Stone” Maigetter, a skateboarding videographer who had worked with Kennedy on various occasions and counted him as a friend – Maigetter and Kennedy actually went back before the latter’s rise to fame. He was married and had two children. He worked for Thrasher Magazine and was known in the community as “The Bible.”
Another passenger suffered minor injuries, a fractured foot, while Kennedy wasn’t hurt at all.
“Kennedy was convicted of vehicular homicide and vehicular assault. In addition to 48 months in prison, he will also under ‘home monitoring’ for 369 days once he gets out of prison,” the Fox affiliate notes.
