British royalty, as most of the regal families around the planet, have seen all sorts of changes throughout the times, but we’re pretty sure few if not any at all have predicted the day electric cars would take the place of the family’s fleet. The Prince of Whales has visited today Nissan’s factory in Sunderland to see how electric vehicles roll of the production line at UK’s biggest car plant.
The factory has produced over eight million cars since it opened in 1986 and currently employs 6,700 people Wearside. It is also the only British manufacturer of electric cars for the mass market, which is probably why prince Charles chose it as one of his first engagements for 2015. The Prince of Whales sat in a red Nissan Leaf and seemed to be quite pleased of the EV’s features.
After all, we’re looking at the world’s best-selling electric vehicle with more than 158,000 units purchased worldwide. Since he was there already, Charles also met local children at the Nissan Global Training Center, which trains staff, apprentices and hosts school engagement activities.
Royals promoting EVs is a good thing
It might not seem a big deal, but having royals backing up electrical vehicles sure is a good way to raise awareness and make EVs a cool thing. And when it comes to the environment, Prince Charles is by far one of the best people to do the job. The longest-serving heir apparent in British history founded The Prince’s Trust in 1967, sponsors The Prince’s Charities, and is patron of numerous other charitable and arts organizations.
Charles is renown for being a big advocate of organic farming for which he established the Duchy Home Farm, run by the Duchy of Cornwall, which produces ingredients for the Duchy Originals brand he founded in 1990. As an environmentalist, he has received numerous awards and recognition from environmental groups around the world.
Who knows, maybe there is hope for a better, cleaner future after all...
