Recently, we were reporting that Nissan axed the Cube model due to slow sales. Well, we can’t blame them... how many non-Japanese people would have loved an asymmetric-styled car looking like a fridge? However, the company seems to haven’t given up on crazy designs yet.
The Murano CrossCabriolet was another experiment Nissan had to give up on, but the two axed models won’t stop the company to come up with another crazy idea that will generate the same hype.
“To be clear, we will morph this space in our portfolio into something iconic,” Nissan chief planning office Andy Palmer told Automotive News in an e-mail. “The space is held to make sure we have something iconic.”
So, we can conclude the automaker has some space for a relatively small car in the lineup that will create at least the amount of fuss the other two experiments did. Hmmm... We can think of two concept Nissan showed up recently but haven’t announced plans to build them on a large scale yet - the IDx and the BladeGlider.
The IDx coupe draws its lines from the oldschool Datsun 510 and if it will see daylight it will certainly be aimed at Toyota’s low buck GT 86 sports coupe, using probably the same ingredients - economic but quirky four cylinder at the front, manual gearbox in the middle and a classic differential at the back. If it’s not going to happen like this, then Nissan should abandon all hope.
On the other hand, the BladeGlider concept is previewing a roadster inspired by the DeltaWing race car you’ve seen at the 24 Hours of Le Mans - An open top electric vehicle, probably having a range extender, and using the same narrow front end for low air resistance.
