Premium German Brands Are Big in... India

{img align=left}Daimler AG and Audi AG’s Indian arms, DAI respectively NSU.XE announced earlier this week that their local sales saw a serious increase in January, driven by a rising demand, as Dow Jones writes.

Audi Indian said that its sales almost tripled to 306 units, from 109, while Daimler’s unit, Mercedes-Benz India report an even higher increase, with its January sales reaching a figure of 403 vehicles, up from 82 in January 2009.

"We look forward to keeping this momentum through the rest of the year," Benoit Tiers, managing director of Audi India, was quoted as saying by Dow Jones.

According to the aforementioned source, India, the world’s second-fastest growing major economy is gaining importance as an automotive premium market, thus becoming more important for premium brands such as BMW AG, Daimler AG and Porsche Automobil Holding SE. The country’s upper class is becoming more and more interested in luxury vehicles offered by such manufacturers.

Tiers added that Audi India expects to sell 2,300 cars in 2010, which can be translated into a 40 percent growth compared to 2009’s figures.

Mercedes-Benz Indian sales registered a 10 percent decrease in 2009, only reaching 3,247 vehicles. Thus the brand lost its luxury segment market leader position to BMW. The latter’s 2009 sales grew 24 percent to 3,619 cars.

While sales numbers (for January) are an encouraging story, we will continue to focus upon profitable growth as part of our long-term strategy for the country," Aulbur said.
