Some drivers and motorbike riders, especially those people who race in circuit-based racing (not point to point), if they don’t have a small LCD screen inside the car, or fail to see the board put up by the pit crew, they may lose count of the laps covered.
That exact phenomenon occurred in a motorbike race in the Italian championship, when rider Riccardo Russo slowed down as he entered the final lap, thinking he had already completed it. He hadn’t! This error of both judgement and calculations, cost him the race.
Despite him realizing his mistake, it was too late, as quite a few riders had already passed him, and he was unable, in less than one lap, to make up the lost time, and he lost the race, despite having won it - in his head.
