Porsche to Launch Its Own Fast-Charging Network, Will Work with Teslas

Up until the electric cars took the stage, we never even once thought about a gas station where certain brands were not allowed to refuel. Fossil-fuel products were universal, and even though so is electricity, the manner in which it leaves the grid and enters the vehicle's battery pack is still subject to debate.
Tesla is the only car manufacturer that owns its own network of charging stations. The company was forced to go down this route if it wanted to fulfill its promise to offer true cross-country ability without obscenely long recharge times. That's how the Supercharger came out, and quite a few years later, it's still the benchmark regarding power output over a specific unit of time.

Talking at the EV-friendly 2016 Paris Motor Show, Porsche CEO Olive Blume revealed that the Volkswagen-owned company is working on building its own network of charging stations. However, Porsche doesn't plan on doing it alone, so this new infrastructure will have to welcome all sorts of electric vehicles from various manufacturers.

"We are in contact with other manufacturers and suppliers around the world to build a fast-charging network," Mr. Blume told Top Gear. "Everybody has the same need. It sounds easy but getting the details agreed is hard. We already have the clear technical concept. It can even work with Teslas, with an adapter.”

No specific names, apart from Tesla, have been mentioned, but information linking Stuttgart neighbors Daimler (who have just launched the EQ electric mobility brand) with Porsche's project came the other way around, from the industry giant's CEO, Dr. Dieter Zetsche. It looks like electric vehicles could be the thing that brings manufacturers closer.

The best news is that Porsche is talking about some seriously fast charging options. It claims that the system will be ale to replenish 80 percent of the Mission E's battery pack in just 15 minutes. That means around 250-miles worth of juice in the time needed to have a coffee. It's about twice as fast as what Tesla is offering at the moment, which in turn is twice as fast as anything else currently on the market.

Porsche did not issue any timeframe related to this project, but since it's still in its infancy and there are more large companies involved, it will likely be a while. At the same time, once everything is ready as far as the papers are concerned, building the stations themselves shouldn't take too long.
