Porsche Tells the Story Behind the 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera GTS B59 Edition

Porsche has an extensive history in endurance racing, and it helped pay tribute to one of its most accomplished racers and teams with the Porsche 911 Carrera GTS B59 Edition Coupe back in 2012. This factory-authorized 911 was designed to honor both Hurley Haywood and Brumos Racing, and Porsche has just released a video highlighting this ultra-rare model.

Only five examples of the 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera GTS B59 Edition were ever built with each paying tribute to the five victories Hurley experienced at the Daytona 24 Hours. Each car features a paint scheme that makes them instantly recognizable as a Brumos car to racing enthusiasts with the iconic white paint and red and blue racing stripes. Other detailed touches include Fuchs-style 19-inch wheels, “PORSCHE” door decals, stainless steel door sill with Hurley’s signature engraved and interior badges showing which of the five builds that particular B59 is.

The styling of the B59 was developed to bookend the racing career of Hurley Haywood. On one end, the overall paint scheme is meant to mimic the look of Hurley’s 1973 racecar in which he won his first of five Daytona 24 trophies. On the other end, with the 997 911 being the basis of the car, it was also fitting since this was the car body style in which Hurley retired. The 997 also gave Brumos its most recent championship in 2011.

As many special-edition 911 models that have been released over the years, these B59 Edition Coupes might go down as some of the rarest ever. With the first car being retained in the Brumos collection, the remaining four vehicles scattered across the country to a quartet of lucky Porsche enthusiasts. This video gives some background on the B59 Edition and visits the four owners who added the car to their collections.
