Porsche Taycan Naming Gets More Confusing, Here Comes the 4S

The saga of Porsche's line of electric cars is entering a new chapter this week, as just one month after the unveiling of the Taycan in two different configurations, the third version is joining the party. And just as its previously-presented brothers, this one too wears a strange name: Taycan 4S.

When the German carmaker revealed the names of the original two EVs, jokes of course flooded the Internet. After all, how can you name a car with no turbocharged engine a Turbo? And just as that storm began to dwindle down, Porsche does it again.

The 4S designation is usually used by the Germans to differentiate their all-wheel-drive cars from rear-wheel driven ones. For the Taycan, however, there is no rear-wheel-drive version, as electric motors spin both axles in all the versions shown so far, hence the eyebrow-raising naming.

Nonetheless, the car is here to occupy – at least temporarily – its rightful place as entry-level electric Porsche and to keep pace with the Porsche naming tradition.

The 4S comes with less power than the Turbo, but with two battery options. As standard, the 4S is fitted with a 79.2 kWh powerpack called Performance, that ensures a range of 407 km (252 miles). This variant of the car, with the overboost function engaged, churns out 530 ps.

Optionally, the 4S can be fitted with the 93.4 kWh battery that is otherwise deployed on the Turbo and Turbo S. With this pack linked to its electric motors, the Taycan develops 571 ps and can achieve a range of 463 km (287 miles).

There are minor visual changes to differentiate between the 4S and the other two, albeit minor: 19-inch Taycan S Aero wheels, red-painted brake calipers, and new geometry for the front apron, side sills and rear diffuser.

The new Porsche Taycan 4S is already available for purchase and will be seen at dealerships no later than January 2020.
