Porsche Takes In-Car VR to the Next Level with New Discovery Documentaries

Gone are the days when the main distraction for car passengers was admiring the scenery. In-car entertainment has made looking out the window obsolete, and soon virtual reality devices will leave only the human body inside the car, as their mind will be otherwise occupied.

During this year's CES, Audi presented a backseat virtual reality entertainment tool developed together with holoride. Since that time, the technology expanded to other brands of the Volkswagen group, including – or especially to – Porsche.

The luxury carmaker has been showing at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show its own take on virtual entertainment for passengers, developed in partnership with media company Discovery. More precisely, Porsche is planning to take its passengers on an educational trip by immersing them in various documentaries, underwater adventures, and even transporting them into the future by means of a drone.

The holoride is not your average VR system. Sure, it uses goggles strapped around the eyes, but its software allows it to link whatever VR experience is chosen with what the car is doing in real life.

For instance, if you happen to be riding a drone in VR and the car that houses your body makes a left turn, so does your drone.

With the help of Discovery, Porsche took the holoride to the next level by including 2D content alongside the already available 3D.

“Now that we have teamed up with Discovery, we can demonstrate for the first time how users can also experience 2D content such as films in the virtual 3D world. We call this an ambi-environment,” said in a statement Nils Wollny, CEO of holoride.

For now, the holoride VR system is not available on the market, but at the rate things are progressing it’s not unlikely we’ll get to see it pretty soon deployed in either a Porsche or Audi car.
