Porsche must be tired with all the Internet celebrity people aim to achieve by taking the 918 Spyder to 217 MPH (350 KM/H) on public roads, so the Germans have decided to... officially hit such a velocity on the highway.
The Autobahn would’ve been a bit predictable, so instead Porsche took its monstrous hybrid to Australia. Drivers over there may not be able to enjoy the charms of the Porsche 918 Spyder, since the hypercar can’t be registered Down Under, but this doesn’t mean they’re not lusting for it.
After all, what other emotion can you experience after what Zuffenhausen has done? Porsche has unleashed the 918 Spyder on the Stuart Highway in the Northern Territory. This is a land where a driver is as free as a bird, with the highway offering a derestricted stretch of road.
The first 15 miles (25 km) were covered on electric power alone to provide some sort of a warm-up. Subsequently, the hypercar’s full capacities were used to hit the speed we mentioned above.
The carmaker brags about the sprint from 37 to 217 MPH (60-350 KM/H) taking only 40 seconds. However, it must’ve felt like a sweet eternity for the driver - as you’ll be able to see in the footage below, keeping the car on track at such speed required knuckles whiter than a celebrity’s teeth.
Nevertheless, Porsche mentioned it had placed spotter along the route to make sure no Kangaroo aimed to turn this into a boxing match. For one thing, the 918 wasn’t wearing gloves.
This was all part of promotional tour that aims to introduce Aussies to Porsche’s hybrids, with the 887 HP (899 PS / 661 kW) halo car serving as a promoter for the Cayenne and Panamera E-Hybrid models.
Spoiler alert: the 4.6-liter V8 sitting at 9,000 rpm may leave you in a dreamy state for the rest of the day.
