Porsche's New Twin-Turbo V8 Launched, to Debut in Upcoming Panamera Turbo

The 37th International Vienna Motor Symposium, which took place at the end of last month, was a brilliant way for automakers to quietly introduce fresh powerplants before these make their debut in upcoming cars, and we're here to focus on Porsche's new twin-turbo V8.

With the current TT 4.8-liter V8 having served Porsche's Panamera and Cayenne Turbo models for over a decade (with plenty of updates), the new engine is set to take over once the second-generation Panamera lands, a move that's expected to take place by the end of the year.

The engine, whose displacement remains unknown for the moment, will employ a pair of twin-scroll turbochargers, as Car and Driver writes.

On the Panamera Turbo, the V8 will deliver 550 hp at 5,750 rpm and a peak torque of 568 lb-ft (770 Nm), offered between 1,960 and 4,500 rpm, while its redline will sit at 6,800 rpm. As Zuffenhausen aficionados have noticed, the numbers are pretty much on par with what the current Panamera Turbo S has to offer, but the spectacle of the new development also sits in the way the oomph is delivered and it's too early to discuss that aspect.

Packing a cylinder deactivation system called "half-engine," the powerplant will be able to use this at low loads between 950 and 3,500 rpm, which will allow it to boost efficiency by around 30 percent.

Porsche explained the engine is optimized for start-stop applications, as well as for hybrid powertrain integration - this only reminds us of a rumor dating back to 2014, which stated we'd be getting 700 hp hybrid Porsches by 2017. While that rumor was referring to the 911 and the Panamera and may have gotten the timing a bit wrong, we might just get out Aventador-rivaling Porsches after all.

In fact, the story spreads to the entire VW Group, as this engine shares its roots with Audi's new turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that has already been used in the fresh S4 and Panamera. Expect the new TT V8 to be offered on a number of lavish VW Group vehicles outside the Porsche line-up.

In other words, this TT V8 heart will find its way under the hood of models wearing Porsche, Audi, Bentley and even Lamborghini (Urus) models.
