Porsche has officially taken the wraps off the newest generation of 911 Turbo, as the German company celebrates 40 years since the first prototypes appeared. This new Type 991 model is thoroughly modern and thoroughly impressive.
Let's start with the headline grabber: the new models has more power and is also more economical than before. The 3.8-liter used in the 2014 911 Turbo will deliver 520 hp (383 kW, 513bhp) thanks to direct injection technology. The power is transmitted to an all-wheel drive chassis via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (PDK). The new 911 Turbo S, also unveiled today, will offer the same engine with 560 hp (412 kW, 52 hp).

The improvements are quite small over the Type 997, but it does leave the Germans with plenty of wiggle room for when they need to add more power.

So how to those numbers translate into performance? The 911 Turbo with Sports Chrono Pack Plus gets to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds, 0.1s faster than the old Turbo S.Meanwhile, the new 911 Turbo S handles the standard sprint in just 3.1 seconds. The car’s top speed is 197 mph. Rumor has it this is actually a restricted speed to stop the tires from bursting.

The new 911 Turbo promises to be a technological showcase. IT feats active rear axle steering, which helps with cornering and high-speed stability, as well as adaptive aerodynamics to reduce front end lift.
