As a Christmas gift for Porsche Panamera owners, the German carmaker announced on Thursday a decision that will affect all of those who purchased this model’s current generation, regardless of where they are.
In a very brief statement, Porsche said that a total of 74,585 vehicles of the current Panamera generation manufactured between 21 March 2016 and 6 December 2018 are affected by the recall. That, in essence, means all of them will have to come back to the workshops for a software fix at the control unit of the power steering system.

Because of an undisclosed glitch, the respective module could at times produce errors as a result of which the electric power steering will occasionally be unavailable, for a limited period. This, in turn, meant that more force is required to be able to steer the car.

Porsche does not say how it discovered the problem or whether it is aware of incidents related to the matter. The carmaker says the fix, which means only a reprogramming of the software, will be conducted only as a precautionary measure.

“A software error means that there is a possibility that the electric power steering will occasionally be unavailable for a limited period,”
said the carmaker.

“If this happens, increased force is then required for steering. To avoid this, the associated control unit needs to be re-programmed with an updated data record as a precautionary measure.”

Owners of the affected vehicles will be contacted in writing and directed to their Porsche center. Regardless of where they are, the fix will come at no cost for the owners and will only take about an hour.

The current generation of the Porsche Panamera was introduced in 2016. When it was launched, it came with several new pieces of hardware, including a new electromechanical steering system that also uses rear axle steering.
