Porsche Ready for Formula E Debut with Drivers Neel Jani and André Lotterer

The start of the 2019 – 2020 Formula E season later this year will see a number of established carmakers joining in on the fun. Among them, German company Porsche, who on Wednesday announced the names of the two drivers it will be sending into battle behind the wheel of its cars.

The competition efforts of Porsche will be in the hands of two drivers. Neel Jani, a Swiss national that has been Porsche’s works driver since 2013, won the 2016 Le Mans at the wheel of a Porsche 919 Hybrid and the FIA World Endurance Champion the same year.

André Lotterer is a German that has been a Porsche works driver since 2017 and has been involved in Formula E in the 2017 – 2018 season as a driver for Techeetah.

In Formula E, all teams are supplied with the same chassis and battery, on top of which they can mount their own electric motors, gearboxes and so on. Crucial for a team’s success are thus its drivers.

“With Neel and André we have two strong drivers for the Porsche works entry into the ABB FIA Formula E Championship in the 2019/2020 season,” said in a statement Carlo Wiggers, Porsche motorsport team manager.

“Both of them have been part of the Porsche family for several years and bring a wealth of experience with them. Neel has been involved in the Formula E development since the start.”

For the coming season (the current one just ended last week in New York) Porsche will be joining Audi, DS, BMW, and Mercedes in a lineup that has grown to include 12 teams.

The recently ended season was won by Jean-Éric Vergne (who became the first in history to win the series twice) and his team, DS Techeetah.

Joining Formula E this year was decided to coincide with the launch of the Taycan, the carmaker’s first fully electric vehicle.
