Porsche Previews Le Mans Comeback with "Race of Records"

With 16 victories between 1970 and 1998, Porsche is the most successful manufacturer to have raced in the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance event.
However, Porsche ceased to run LMP1 prototypes in the Circuit de la Sarthe after racing the 911 GT1 in 1998, leaving Audi to dominate de series. But Stuttgart wants to return to Le Mans in 2014 and has already announced factory support for a a Weissach-built LMP1 vehicle.

In order to campaign their highly anticipated comeback, Porsche has released a video that's showcasing the manufacturer's success in the 1971 season, when they've experienced a "race of records".

42 years ago Porsche showed up at Le Mans with a 42 kg (92.6 pounds) magnesium frame for the 917, establishing several records, including an average practice speed of 250 km/h (155 mph), 5,335.3 kilometers (3315.2 miles) covered in 24 hours, and a race average speed of 222.304 km/h (138.133 mph), a record yet unbeaten.
