Enter the modular charging station.
Porsche calls this standardized, weather-proof housing for the transformer and galvanic isolation FlexBox. Placing FlexBoxes away from where the customer plugs his car allows for both visual and acoustic improvements, while fitting the isolation here removes the need for placing it inside the charging poles.
Then comes the so-called PowerBox, the unit which converts alternating current to direct current. This can be equipped with two sets of power electronics, thus providing electricity for two charging points.
Last, but not last, come the charging poles, ChargeBox. These have been designed to hold an additional buffer storage battery in addition to a power unit that kicks in whenever sufficient power from the grid is not available.
The ChargeBox can be used by multiple cars at the same time, and the charging process can be “extremely fast” : a 400 km range (250 miles) can be attained in 20 minutes while using an 800- volt technology.
ChargeBoxes will be offered by Porsche in two configurations: a 70 kWh battery and a 160 kW charging station and a 140 kWh battery and two 160 kW charging stations.
Porsche says the distance between the FlexBox and the PowerBox can be as high as 200 meters (656 feet), while that between the PowerBox and the charging poles can be up to 100 meters (328 feet).
This type of configuration reducesg the space required to install the charging pole and the allows for more needed space for the cars.
