Porsche hardly ever markets a 4x4 model like the Carrera 4S or the Cayenne without mentioning the heritage side of things. Back in 1978, the Germans built the series 953, a heavily modified version of the 911 that was designed for rallying in general and for the Paris to Dakar one in particular.
Since you can't celebrate 50 years of 911 without paying tribute to such a machine, Porsche plans to do just that and will reportedly show a concept called the 911 Sasfari next year, clearly a tribute to the SC "Safari" rally car that put on the famous Martini racing colors.
The report from the print version German publication Motor Revue was cited by Car and Driver and suggests there's even a good chance for a production version which would reach market in 2016. Our mystery concept will come out much sooner than that, at the 2014 Beijing Auto Show in April and could be based on the Carrera 4S.
The original Safari was built with long-travel suspension, bull bar, classic Martini & Rossi livery, and a locking rear differential. Power came from a 3-liter air-cooled flat-six with 250 hp that have the car a top speed of more than 125 mph (200 km/h) over the rough roads. The car weight only 1,200 kg, despite a large 110 liter fuel tank.
