If you're not a fan of sports roar-biased SUVs that are really fast, today's your lucky day. The most embarrassing picture ever taken at a press event puts the new Porsche Macan in a tight marketing spot, being belittled by a car a few times cheaper than it.
British journalist Gavin Green was invited to Morocco for a big press even featuring the Porsche Macan. In one of his pre-event Tweets, he says he's usually "not a fan of sports road-biased SUVs". Could it be because they're not real SUV?
Even before people got to drive the German car, a few test models had been ominously crashed in the hectic Moroccan traffic, Gavin says. What happened next is best explained in his own words: "Porsche Macan stuck off roading in Morocco. Dacia Duster to the rescue".
It's not clear who actually stranded the Macan, but in a followup Tweet the editors softens the blow to Porsche's morale with this comment: "Macan actually proved better off road than I thought. It survived this without Duster assistance".
That's just what can happen if you don't plan for the unexpected. Had there been a Cayenne with offroad tires around, this would have been an altogether less interesting story. In the long run, this is unlikely to affect the new Porsche model's reputation, but the Germans might have unwillingly created an underdog hero out of the plucky budged car, the cheapest of the cheap.
Overall, not a good day for Porsche… excellent marketing for Dacia though.
