Porsche Factory Team Returning to Le Mans in 2013 with 911 991 RSR

The 2013 racing season will be an important one for Porsche, as it will mark the factory team’s return to endurance racing. Porsche will use two new 991-generation 911 RSRs in the Le Mans 24 hours race, as well as in the World Endurance Championship (WEC).

The last time Porsche was officially present in endurance racing was in 1998, when the carmaker enjoyed an overall victory at Le Mans. The two 911 RSR racers will compete in the GTE class, being run by Porsche AG Team Manthey. The team will be led by Olaf Manthey, who has five overall victories with Porsche at the Nürburgring 24 hours event and has recently competed in the International GT Open using a 911 GT3 RSR (997 generation).

“The new 911 RSR is currently being developed by our engineers and tested by our works drivers,” said Hartmut Kristen, Head of Porsche Motorsport. “What better time could there be to introduce the new car than in the 50th anniversary year of the Porsche 911.”

The new 991 911 RSR could use an evolution of the 4.0-liter flat-six used by the current car, but details are limited at the moment.
