Porsche Designer Becomes Head of Lamborghini Styling

We haven't even fully digested the idea that Lamborghini's CEO is leaving the company to helm Audi's Quattro GmbH and the VW Group is hitting us with a second executive shuffling announcement that's set to make waves.

Sant'Agata Bolognese now has a new chief designer, namely Mitja Borkert. Hardcore Porsche fans might know him, since the man served Zuffenhausen's styling department since 1999, while he became head of Porsche exterior design back in 2014.

The latter position means Borkert has had a serious impact on the styling of the Mission E, but other projects where he played a key role include the Panamera Sport Turismo concept, the 987 Boxster, the Macan, and the Cayenne.

Since styling is considerably more important for Lambos than it is for Porsches and even Ferraris, we have to mention the Raging Bull finds itself in a styling situation that requires full attention.

On the one hand, we have the company's hypercars, with the recent years bringing one opinion splitter after another (that's putting it mildly). And the Centenario that has just greeted us in Geneva is no exception.

On the other hand, the company's standard offerings, if we may call them so, have gone a bit soft. We're talking about the Huracan line-up here, since we haven't seen such a tame-looking Raging Bull since the 1995 Lamborghini Cala.

Interestingly enough, the Cala, which, by the way, anybody can "drive" in Need For Speed II SE, came from Italdesign. VW happens to have taken over the Italian styling company back in 2010.

And while founder Giorgetto Giugiaro may have left the ship to kick off a new design adventure, Italdesign will now be run by Filippo Perini, the Lamborghini head designer being replaced by the man who is the main topic of this article. For the record, Italdesign swiped us off our feet in Geneva with a concept showing obvious Lamborghini styling cues.

With former Scuderia Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali as the new CEO and the styling management switch mentioned above, we're keeping a close eye on Lamborghini.
