It had been speculated before that Porsche was looking to build a car to slot in-between the 911 and the 918, yet it had never been officially confirmed. Well, now, Porsche CEO Matthias Muller officially confirmed that the German automaker is, in fact, already working on the car, which is going to be called the 961.
The gap in the range they are trying to fill is that between the higher-performance 911s, such as the GT2 and GT3, and the 918 Spyder hibrid, which is much quicker and much more expensive than either of them. The 918 is epxected to cost somewhere around the €840,000 mark, while the new 916 would cost a lot less than half that, somewhere around the €300,000 mark.

Also, power is expected to come from the same engine that powers the 918, yet without all the complicated hybrid parts to weigh it down, so the 4.6-liter V8 unit with around 570 hp should push the 961 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in a time very similar to that of the Ferrari 458 and the McLaren MP4-12C.
