Following its launch in the Old Continent in February 2015, the Porsche Classic Radio Navigation system can now be ordered in the United States and Canada. While the unit may look like a classic radio from the 1970s, it does much more than catch FM signals.
The black surface and two knobs hide key features, including sat nav, a touch-sensitive display, two USB ports, an AUX slot, an amplifier (4x45 watts), and phone connectivity via Bluetooth. Excluding the Porsche 356, the unit is suitable for the 911 (from the first model to the 1998 model year 993 series), as well as the 912, 914, 924, 928, 944, and 968.

If you want to get more technical, I’m much obliged to tell you that the Porsche Classic Radio Navigation system is based on the PCM (Porsche Communication Management) found in today’s models. The maps are stored on a microSD card, while the driver can choose between 2D or 3D maps to display the route on the 3.5-inch color touchscreen.

There’s another micoSD card slot if you wish to take your favorite Pink Floyd songs in MP3 format with you. Better still, the Porsche Classic Radio Navigation system also comes with Sirius XM satellite radio. Due to its shape, the unit fits perfectly into the DIN 1 slot. Porsche used the DIN 1 standard for decades in its old-school models, which is why the installation shouldn’t be a headache if you plan to do it on yourself.

As far as pricing is concerned, I’m afraid you need to call your nearest Porsche dealer and ask. In Germany, for example, the Porsche Classic Radio Navigation system is priced at €1,184 including VAT. Converted at current exchange rates, that’s $1,320, a fair price considering what you get in return. More info on the Porsche Classic Radio Navigation can be found in the operating manual attached in PDF format below.
