With the Cayman GT4, Porsche has brought its mid-engined offering deeper into 911 territory than ever before. This is far from a metaphor - since the GT division's Cayman packs a 911 Carrera S engine and 911 GT3 suspension, the description above is a literal one.
However, there will always be certain owners for whom the factory product isn't good enough. This is where the tuning market steps in. Since Porsche is only building 2,500 GT4s per year, you'd expect buyers to leave these cars in Zuffenhausen condition, but you'd be wrong.
The most recent example of this comes from the track-savvy Cayman in the footage below. Gifted with an Akrapovic exhaust, this GT4 delivers a 17-minute flat-six concert.
Before you move on to enjoy the boxer engine soundtrack, there are a few things we need to discuss regarding the custom exhaust system amplifying the voice of the 3.8-liter unit.
We're dealing with a titanium development here, which means the system is 3.6 kg (7.9 lbs) lighter when compared to the standard exhaust of the car. Then there's the usual output bump. With this being a naturally aspirated machine, the increase isn't spectacular, but it's worth mentioning the GT4 gains 6 hp and 8 lb-ft (10.5 Nm) of twist.
Just like Porsche's hardware, the Akrapovic exhaust performing here comes with valves that allow the driver to control the sound. The aftermarket specialist takes the time to explain this video was shot with the valves open, while the machine was driven in the Sport mode.
And you shouldn't imagine people tweak Cayman GT4 exhausts because the soundtrack is not as fierce as that delivered by the GT3 RS, for instance. We recently talked about the custom exhaust realm also targeting the 911 GT3 RS. For instance, Taiwan-based exhaust specialist Ipe has let it slip that its hardware equips at least ten units of the Rennsport Neunelfer. So 0.5 percent of the GT3 RS machines Porsche has built so far come with their exhausts.
