Porsche Cayman, Boxster, VW Golf to Be Built Together

The Volkswagen Group is again sketching a production plan that involves more of the brands it owns, this time aiming to build the Porsche Cayman, the Boxster and the Volkswagen Golf under the same roof. However, such a thing is possible only if the current assembly plant that is scheduled to manufactured the two Porsche models, namely the Zuffenhausen facility, will reach its maximum capacity, so VW would be forced to look elsewhere to meet demand.

The two Porsches could thus be built in the plant as the Volkswagen Golf Convertible, AutoBild reports, but, given the fact that Porsche's models are usually sold in low volumes, such a thing is close to impossible.

As we said, this isn't the first time when Volkswagen Group involves more of the brands it owns into the production process of certain models. Although building two Porsches together with a Volkswagen under the same roof could cause some perception problems among buyers, Volkswagen Group earlier this year decided to make Audi the sole developer of SUVs for the whole group.

At the same time, Porsche would be in charge of all sports cars to be sold by brands included in the Volkswagen Group, in an effort to benefit the most from the resources each entity has.

"This decision was made in agreement with all of the brands involved and will create synergies throughout the group to the benefit of both the brand and the customers," a spokesman said according to an Automotive News Europe report. "This is not badge engineering. Porsche will be responsible for the engines and performance of the next Cayenne. It will drive like a Porsche and perform like a Porsche,” a Porsche representative added.
