Plans for a Cayenne Coupe were apparently revealed by the Stuttgartiens to British magazine Autocar. According to them, the new model will be ready by 2018, four years from now. That's enough time for the Germans to launch the facelift for the current model and work an a brand new one.

If you find it hard to imagine what a chopped Cayenne will look like, check out the renderings in our photo gallery, created by graphic manipulator Theophilus Chin even before Porsche's alleged slip of the tongue about its 2018 offering.

According to our source, the model range will closely mirror that of the regular Cayenne, being as diverse as to also include the GTS and range-topping Turbo S. Of course, we're talking about next-generation architecture here, so what exactly will power these cars remains a mystery.

The automotive world's curiosity in SUCs was re-sparked by Mercedes last month, when it unveiled a preview concept for the upcoming model called the MLC at the Beijing Auto Show. Designed to compete with the BMW X6, it will eventually face off against a second generation of that model which the Bavarians are already developing. The F16 X6 should be out this year, based on the same platform as the all-new X5.

Needless to say, arriving many years late to the game is going to hurt Porsche's chances of creating a best seller. Whatever comes down their pipeline had better be a very special sort of vehicle.
