Porsche Battles Aston Martin for GT3 Badge And Wins

Common sense tells us that the ‘first come, first served’ rule is a good way of deciding who is entitled to use or possess a certain thing. Except when your name is Porsche and you think someone stole your ‘GT3’ name.

Long story short, Aston Martin decided to baptize their limited-batch V12 Vantage using the GT3 name and this is how the Gaydon-based carmaker presented the model a few weeks ago, during the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. Hence, we all saw and admired the Aston Martin Vantage GT3.

But you see, Porsche didn’t like that and went ‘Suits’ on Aston Martin, claiming that the GT3 name is its own nomenclature for road cars, according to Goodwood Road and Racing. However, that’s only the blue corner. In the red corner, Aston Martin claimed that GT3 stands for a racing category now (FIA GT3) which was used before Porsche decided to stick it on the back of a 996 GT3 in 1999. And by the way, there’s a certain Lotus Esprit GT3 that say daylight before the aforementioned Porsche model.

The so-called fight never got out of round one, because Aston Martin handled the issue like a sir and took a step back, deciding to drop the GT3 name and go for GT12 badge for both the Vantage GT3 and the Vantage racer. Also, they could have gone for GT2+1, GT0+3 and GT4-1 just to keep Porsche’s outburst go from a quarrel to something bigger.

It is worth mentioning that the Aston Martin Vantage GT3 GT12 100-unit production run is already sold out, but Aston Martin decided to play it cool and avoid throwing cash out of the window on a litigation trial.

On the other hand, Porsche’s quick reply is to be understood, since they are looking to preserve an important link in their sporty genes.
