The Nurburgring does not forgive. This is the rule and not even the closes relatives, test prototypes that attend college on the Nordschleife, are exempted from it. This, obviously leads to painful situations and the latest one to be flogged by the side barriers on the ‘Ring is a Porsche 911 facelift test vehicle, a Turbo.
The 911 Turbo is the kind of supercar that can understand much more things than you would imagine, as Porsche has spent over half a century refining that pendulum effect or the rear-mounted flat six. Nonetheless, when you finally take things too far, expect a rather unforgettable physics lesson. Test drivers are paid to take things past the limit, so the accident shouldn’t come so much as a surprise.
The prototype was being driven on the Pflanzgarten section of the Nurburgring when the crash took place. Named after a plant nursery that used to be here, this section of the Green Hell isn’t shy when it comes to mixing hefty elevation changes with corners you have to know by heart, as their entry visibility is limited.
The 911 Turbo facelift test vehicle came off the track, kissing the barriers on the side. The result? Red lipstick, as well as some bruises, left on the left side of the supercar. The front bumper, headlight, as well as the rear bumper were hit. Nonetheless, the damage does not seem to be all that serious and the driver was not injured in the crash.
In spite of this, the 911 Turbo prototype did not drive back into the Porsche test center, so a trailer was called to pick it up.
Porsche is expected to release the 911 facelift sometime in 2015, but the big changes for the Turbo are expected to arrive in 2017. The Germans are said to be working on a hybridization plan, which could see the 911 and Panamera Turbo receive plug-in hybrid versions. The electric assistance should take the Turbos to about 700 hp. Now that’s something worth waiting for.
