With Porsche currently working full-throttle to complete the development of the 911 facelift, the latest model to join the revamp-wagon is the Targa. Our spy photographers recently encountered a 911 Targa prototype sporting all the changes of the previously-spied 911 test vehicle.
The first though that comes to mind upon seeing the adjacent images is that the Targa will soon receive a revamp together with the rest of the 911 range. Nevertheless, this move would be confusing, since the model was unveiled in January this year, at the Detroit Motor Show. The facelifted Porsche 911 should hit the market by Spring next year and it’s not like Porsche to only keep the current Targa on the market for a little ove one year.

Regardless of this, the Targa test vehicle we see here is most likely the GTS. The 991 generation hasn’t received any GTS versions until now, but the facelift should bring this. We’ll take a short detour to explain that the GTS is destined for those who find the standard Carrera S too soft and yet don’t want to go as hardcore as a GT3, for instance.

Not that Porsche would ever need justification for a certain 911 version, but, power-wise, the current 911 range leaves plenty of room for such a model. This will be slotted in between the 400 hp Carrera (4) S and the 475 hp GT3.

The GTS will be part of the expected enrichment of the Targa line-up. While with the 997 Targa you didn’t have too many models too choose from, the 991 is expected to offer a wider range, possibly including a Targa Turbo.

Returning to our prototype, we notice the new bumpers, with the front apron sporting the heftier air intakes. As we’ve seen in a previous set of 911 facelift spyshots, these could feature active grille shutters, while their design is a tad edgier. In addition, the new LED daytime running lights are present.

Moving to the area of the 911 that matters the most, we find a rear apron housing a pair of exhaust tips that have migrated from the sides to the middle of the car.

The majestic canvas-covered magnesium roof of the Targa obviously remains unchanged on the prototype vehicle.
