Porsche made a manual version of the 911 GT3 and GT3 RS after all, deciding to name it the 911 R. The company will officially unveil the new car this week at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, but images of the new 911 version have leaked online ahead of the official presentation.
The first photo gallery of what is supposed to be the Porsche 911 R has been published by Dutch website Vierenzestig. While the pictures are of a disappointingly low resolution, they do show a Porsche 911 with different styling.
In the first place, the images reveal that Porsche has ditched the aerodynamic elements of the 911 GT3 RS for the R version. Secondly, the vehicle in the press images features a set of longitudinal stripes, as well as a set of decals on the doors and sides. However, the 500 HP engine of the GT3 RS has been kept, and it is now mated to a manual gearbox.
This transmission configuration was not available for the GT3 RS, so this marks a significant element for Porsche purists who were disappointed with the previously mentioned version of the famous German sports car. The flat-six engine is naturally aspirated and has a 4.0-liter capacity.
As far as we know, the new Porsche 911 R will be manufactured as a limited edition model, so only 600 units will be made. Since the vehicle is designed for purists only, it will be available with a manual transmission, while the PDKs will be restricted to the other versions of the 911.
The new model is not the first 911 R ever launched, but the previous model came to market more than four decades ago, in 1973. We expect the new 911 R to be more expensive than the 911 GT3 R. Most likely, the limited-edition model will be rapidly sold-out as collectors and Porsche enthusiasts are quick when it comes to purchasing vehicles like these.
