As Porsche is moving closer and closer to introducing the new face of its 911, a rumor comes to change everything we expected about the move. While the upcoming 911s were expected to be labeled as 991.2 facelift models, it appears Porsche is ready to introduce the 992 chassis code.
The news comes from Motor Trend's Jonny Lieberman, who used his Twitter account to let it slip that the Germans are ready for this surprising change. In fact, the topic of the post was to announce that the 911 GTS is set for a Los Angeles Auto Show debut, with the journalist adding that this will mark the introduction of the 992 code.

Arriving in due time for a facelift (four years), the upcoming 911 action can be seen as Zuffenhausen's typical mid-cycle revamp. Aside from the usual minor model updates, such as what we'll receive on the Turbo, for instance, this refresh will have a special place in Porsche's history though, as it will see the carmaker place all-new turbocharged flat four(s) at the rear of the 911.

Of course, special editions such as the aforementioned GTS and the GT3 RS will arrive with this. Nonetheless, the switch to the 992 chassis code would be something totally new and we hope to get new details on the matter soon.

Retuning to the 911 GTS, you can regard this as a halfway point between a Carrera and a GT3, with the edition set to arrive in both Coupe and Cabriolet flavors.

The GTS will come with all-wheel drive and will be motivated by a slightly tweaked incarnation the 400 hp engine of the Carrera S. One easy way to recognize the car will arrive thanks to its distinct exhaust note.

Visually, the GTS will wear specific front and rear aprons, while its front and rear fenders may be even wider than those on other 911 "4" models. The GTS will also ride on dedicated wheels and we are very curious to see what Porsche comes up with after the brilliant Fuchs wheels it currently offers.

Expect more clues to arrive by late November, when the LA Auto Show is set to take place.
