The BMW i8 and the Porsche 911 GT3 PDK are the kind of machines that don't share the same customer base, despite delivering somewhat similar quarter mile performance. However, on-paper racing is one thing and seeing the two duking it out at the drag strip is another thing.
The piece of footage below brought the two German go-fast machines at the zMAX Dragway in Concord, NC.
While we'll leave the video do its job, we can talk about what should happen here. In theory, the track-savvy Zuffenhausen machine should complete the quarter mile in the high 11-second range, while the Bavarian gas-electric sportscar should complete the task in a little over 12 seconds.
Since the i8 packs all-wheel-drive, the Bimmer will obviously grab the start, but the question is what happens after the initial side of the shenanigan. Check out the video below to see how this is translated into the real world.
Sheer speed aside, the I8 and the GT3 sit at the opposite ends of the speed world. While the BMW mixes a downsized 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo with electric propulsion, the GT3 is one of the few 911s that have kept their naturally aspirated engines after the 991.2 mid-cycle revamp kicked in. And since the upcoming 991.2 GT3 will add a manual, we can say the gap between the two is set to increase.
While we're at it, we'll mention the drag race didn't happen by chance - the velocity fight took place as part of this year's edition of the goldRush Rally.
At its eight adventure, the event is allowing north of 100 speed demons to get their thrills around the country. The shenanigan kicked off on May 13, with the finish scheduled for May 21, which means this is probably not the last time when we get to enjoy a stunt related to this Rally.
