Porsche 911 GT3 RS Boxer Engine is All-New, Naturally Aspirated, to Pack At Least 500 HP

Remember the limited edition and highly coveted Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0 from the 997 generation? We certainly do, all 600 of them and their screamin’ 4-liter boxer engine with 493 horsepower and 460 Nm (339 lb-ft) on tap. Imagine keeping that oomph under control on a RWD 911 wearing semi slick rubber...
With a 3.9-second sprint to 100 km/h (62 mph), the GT3 RS 4.0 was heralded as the fastest naturally aspirated boxer-engined 911 from the 997 family. It is funny how the 991-gen Porsche 911 GT3 and its trick PDK seven-speed dual-clutch auto gets to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds, although it’s got a 3.8-liter mill.

It’s no longer a secret the 991 family will get an even more berserk variant of the GT3. The carparazzi spotted production-ready prototypes testing in all sorts of places, a tell-tale sign that Geneva may be the place of unveiling for the all-new Porsche 911 GT3 RS.

Word has it that the 997’s GT3 RS 4.0 4-liter motor may be adopted by the all-new 991 GT3 RS too, but...

...the German manufacturer’s research & development boss Wolfgang Hatz is telling something else. Speaking to AutoExpress, Hatz confirmed an all-new engine was developed for the 2016 Porsche 911 GT3 RS. The brand new six-cylinder boxer is the most powerful naturally aspirated motor ever fitted to a neunhundertelf in the nameplate’s 52-year existence according to the automaker's development boss.

To be paired exclusively to the PDK transmission, Wolfgang Hatz added that “performance has to be the main objective. Customers love the current GT3. The RS has to be the peak. The 991 GT3 was very much a surprise for everybody because it’s a very useable car for every day. The GT3 RS will be more extreme.”

Fingers crossed it’s a 500-plus horsepower 4.0 boxer as earlier reports suggested, though not the same as the one that drives the rarefied, RWD mechanical savagery simply known as the 997 GT3 RS 4.0.
