Porsche 911 DTM Racecar Rendered, Reminds Us of Group 5 Golden Era

Porsche may have already treated us to no less than three motorsport-destined incarnations of the current 991 911 generation, but we're ready to bet the hype built around them would pale in comparison to a theoretical Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters machine.

Yes, this is yet another answer to a question nobody asked (at least not recently) and yet we can't help but drool over the rendering above. With the pixels having been rearranged by British digital artist Khyzyl Saleem, the image shows a 911 GT3 DTM racecar.

Those following the motorsport realm will easily recognize the aero pack this Neunelfer has been gifted with and we can only dream of seeing this at work on the track.

Come to think of it, this reminds us of the Golden Era - we're talking about the late 70s and early 80s, which saw Zuffenhausen taking part in the DRM (Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft) championship, which preceded the DTM.

Porsche's infamous 935, as well as the automaker's 936 and 956 racers put on quite a show in the Group 5 category. The racing efforts were so intense that Group 5 cars sometimes ended up outpowering Formula One cars of the time, with certain common training sessions seeing the sportscar racers passing the F1 cars on the straights.

Alas, such ultra-sharp results saw costs skyrocketing, which was one of the important factors that led to the demise of the whole shenanigan. In fact, the DTM's more down-to-earth budget saw it rising as Germany's most significant racing series in the mid-80s.

You don't need to turn to VHS recordings for some Group 5 action, though. Thankfully, Automobilclub von Deutschland, the country's oldest automobile club, has decided to bring back the track glory. Since 2005, the club has been holding annual Revival Deutsche Rennsportmeisterschaft races at its Oldtimer Grand Prix events and we've added the 2015 session in the video below.
