Today Porsche introduced the Carrera 4 and 4S AWD versions of the 911 Coupe and Cabriolet and also used the occasion to announce an optional sliding glass roof for all the Coupes.
The introduction of the optional sliding glass roof is another important piece in our 911 991 Targa speculation puzzle. We previously told you that the Targa model might not be sold as a standalone one anymore, as Porsche could want to bring it under the Carrera brand, which is enjoying more public attention.

Whatever choice Porsche makes, this won’t affect the nature of the model and it is now clear that while the name may be tamed, the car’s identity will become stronger. Thus, those who want “some” open air in their 911 but don’t like the Cabrio will be able to opt for the aforementioned generously-sized sliding glass roof, which offers so much more than a typical sunroof does.

As for those who really want to enjoy the Targa experience, they will enjoy the benefits of a dedicated model which will bring back the spirit of the original 1960s Targa, but with a modern layout.

As we previously reported, we expect Porsche to use a layout that includes a central rollbar and a massive glass panel that will electrically be folded behind this. The company will probably reinvent the Targa concept just like it did with the Cabriolet one for the new 991 generation, which has an intelligent roof mechanism.

The 991 generation of the (Carrera?) Targa is expected to arrive in the first half of next year.
