We want to argue that there's something holy about a nimble 2-seat sports cars, but after seeing what the Tesla Model 3 did to the Toyota Supra, we're not so sure.
Whether they'd like to admit it or not, Porsche must be thinking about replacing the Cayman and Boxster with electric models. Sure, they can crank out a million special models and make a lot of money, but the mid-engined "affordable" Porsche doesn't have the same wow factor it did when it came out.
And you know what has wow factor? Electric cars. Well, not as much as they did a couple of years ago, but Porsche did manage to put a big dent in the armor of the Tesla Model S with its awesome new Taycan. Sure, it costs a bit more and the claimed performance numbers aren't as good, but you get what we're saying.
Part of the appeal of the Taycan is the way it's designed, which inspired digital artist Kleber Silva to make a 718 Taycan S. The name is kind of wacky, but everything else kind of makes sense, and we're not saying this just to post some random photo and get ad money.
Given how much money and time went into the development of this thing, the Taycan should change sports cars in some way; we're just not sure how yet. And that DNA could trickle down to the humble Boxster/Cayman series.
Company bosses are already talking about, just like Audi is looking to migrate the TT to an EV platform. It's been a while since the companies collaborated on something like this. Way back in the day, there was a plan to make jointly developed mid-engined sports car between the two and Volkswagen, which also put together the BlueSport concept car.
"Oh, but I can't carve up a canyon road every night in an EV," we hear you say. But you might if that EV is a Porsche, and they're probably not after your money anyway. They want Instagram influencers, the young money.
