Now that the Porsche 718 Boxster has entered the arena, the opinions on the turbocharged powertrains are split. Sure, the same can be said about the 991.2 911 Carrera and Carrera S, but unlike in the case of the Neunelfer, this is the first time in the Boxster's 20-year life that forced induction is on the menu.
Many things can be said about the 718 Boxster, but instead of bringing potentially subjective conclusions, we want to stick to the basic performance measurement instruments for now.

This is why acceleration tests were invented, so you'll find a rather good one in the first video below. To be more precise, we're dealing with a Launch Control test, one that sees the driver continuing to mash the throttle up to 155 mph (250 km/h).

It's worth noting that we're dealing with the Boxster S model here, which means motivation comes from a 2.5-liter flat six delivering 345 hp (make that 350 PS) and a peak torque of 310 lb-ft (420 Nm).

Notice how a downside of the turbocharging shows up at the end of the rev counter - check out the rate at which the speedometer climbs and you'll notice some of the pace is lost when things go above 6,000 revs. Then again, the meaty turbo-induced torque can't be denied.

Nevertheless, with drifting having gained traction over the last few years, we have to ask ourselves - how good is the 718 Boxster when it comes to going sideways? Will the inevitable turbo lag affect the delicate handling balance that sits at the base of any slip angle activity?

These two questions, as well as others we won't bother asking, find their answers in the second piece of footage below, which sees the 718 Boxster S going sideways around a course. Oh, and in case you wanted to know more about the rubber being used here, we'll mention the mid-engined machine comes with Pirelli PZero tires.
