Come to think of it, some of the best cars we've driven over the years were built under a certain pressure. This also applies to the 718 Boxster, with Porsche relying on this model to make its four-cylinder return (the Macan 2.0's regional appeal in China means it doesn't count).
The 2016 Porsche 718 Boxster is the kind of cake whose icing is well hidden in its middle section. We're talking about the 2.0-liter flat-four delivering 300 hp (for the standard model), or the 2.5-liter boxer producing 350 hp for the S flavor.

The engines deliver superior power and a hefty boost in the torque department compared to its non-718 predecessor. The performance brought by the new hp and torque numbers, such as the 4-second 0 to 60 mph time, means that the facelifted Boxster threatens sports cars with more serious ambitions.

This also means Porsche tuners are now rubbing their laptops in excitement as the forced-fed machine is making its 2016 Geneva Motor Show debut, but this is another story for another time.

The rest of the changes introduced for the mid-cycle boost follow the typical Porsche understated nature. Despite certain visual bits, such as the upper rear fascia showing delicious updates, we might still end up with non-car people mistaking this for the pre-refresh model.

Oh well, with McLaren and Ferrari (think 488 GTB compared to the 458 Italia) also sharing the path these days, we won't complain about the public attention paid to these go-fast machines.

On the other side of the automotive passion scale, purists will easily define the 718 Boxster as the opposite of the 911 R, and there are plenty of reasons for them to do so.

Porsche's 718 Boxster will reach European showrooms in April. This will give Old Continent buyers a bit of a head start, since the US gets the mid-engined sportscar starting from June.
