Pontiac Vibe Officially Recalled

As was to be expected, the avalanche of recalls coming from Japanese carmaker Toyota is affecting the Pontiac Vibe as well. The Vibe, built by GM in the now defunct New United Motor Manufacturing (NUMMI) joint venture with Toyota, experiences roughly the same problems as the countless Toyotas recalled.

The official recall notice was posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website, but does not specify the number of Vibes affected, nor does it explain what course of action will GM take to remedy the problem.

"General Motors is recalling model year 2009-2010 Pontiac Vibe, due to the manner in which the friction lever interacts with the sliding surface of the accelerator problem inside the pedal sensor assembly," the post says.

"The sliding surface of the lever may become smooth during vehicle operation. In this condition, if condensation occurs on the surface, as may occur from heater operation (without A/C) when the pedal assembly is cold."

"The friction when the accelerator pedal is operated may increase, which may result in the accelerator pedal becoming harder to depress, slower to return or, in the worst case, mechanically stuck in a partially depressed position."

As said, General Motors did not provide a number of the unit subject to the recall, nor did they provide a possible remedy for the fault. If you are a Vibe owner, GM advices you to visit the GM Owner Center website or call 1-800-620-7668.
