Pontiac G8-Based Concept Police Car

Bad news for the American delinquents, as a futuristic police vehicle equipped with number plate-recognising cameras and a laser gun that shoots tracking bugs on to other cars could hit the U.S. market.

The vehicle was developed by the Melbourne-based National Safety Agency and the LAPD as a test-bed to trial the latest technology in a vehicle environment, Gizmag reported.

"It's a laser-guided projectile which you sight on the vehicle in front and if they were to drive off as you get out of the vehicle you press the button on the key remote,"
said NSA operations director Des Bahr.

"It will laser guide that GPS tracking device on to that vehicle that's driven off and they can't get out of the vehicle quick enough to get it off, that's how aggressive the glue is," added Bahr.

The concept car features a big touchscreen embedded in the passenger dash, linked to computer systems in the boot, while also hosting three digital cameras. One of them will constantly be scanning faces and the number plates of passing vehicles. The car will also enable officers at police headquarters to remotely access a live feed of the view from the car during a pursuit.

Other features include:

  • Automatic, ink-free fingerprinting on a mobile digital device and voice-recognition technology.
  • A duress button to call for back-up more quickly.
  • Night vision, moulded seats, rubber flooring and a PIN-activated safe for heavy weaponry.
  • A power-off device that can be activated by headquarters to slow or shut the car down.

The vehicle is based on the Australian-built Holden Commodore, which were re-badged as Pontiac G8s in the U.S. Mr Bahr said two examples of the LAPD Pontiac G8 project vehicle would be sent to the US for testing by mid-year.
